John Buchanan’s controversial multiple captain theory has been backed by his former assistant in the Australia team and present Bangladesh coach Jamie Siddons, who intends using a similar plan for the Tigers to take the pressure off regular skipper Mohammad Ashraful.
“I have a similar sort of plan for our boys too. I do see some merit in it,maybe it helps to take some pressure off Ashraful, maybe if Shakib (Al Hasan) and Mashrafe (Mortaza) could share a bit of responsibilities. I see a bit of merit in it,because of our skipper’s inexperience but it needs the board’s approval and we haven’t got that yet,” Siddons was quoted as saying by ‘The Daily Star’.
“We have a good leadership group. There is enough pressure in the team like talking to you guys (journalists) after every win or loss. So if we go for the multiple captaincy, that can help Ashraful because some pressure will be taken off him,” added the Victorian, who was assistant to Buchanan during Australia’s 2005 Ashes tour of England.
Ashraful and Mortaza are currently in South Africa to play in the ongoing Indian Premier League. While the Bangladesh skipper is a member of the Mumbai Indians squad,Mortaza is under Buchanan’s guidance in the Kolkata outfit.
However, neither of the two Bangladeshis have so far got an opportunity to showcase their talent because the IPL teams are allowed to include only four foreign players in the playing eleven.
Although Siddons was hopeful about the duo’s involvement in the second edition of the Twenty20 event, the 44-year-old coach was unhappy with the number of Bangladeshi players participating in the cash-rich tournament.
“If they get a game or two,I’m sure they will become a part of the team. I know there is a lot of competition within their teams. It’s a little bit unfair that our boys are not getting games in the IPL because at least our top five players could be there and something has to be done from the board’s end,” he said.
The Bangladesh coach said with the Twenty20 World Cup around in June,he had been closely observing the IPL matches. “I’m looking more at the Indian players and the other world players and maybe looking for their weaknesses. I haven’t been looking at Ash (Ashraful) and Mash (Mortaza) and didn’t have a chance to.”
