S.A.S. NAGAR, July 20: Apprehending harbouring of anti-social elements by house-owners in the township, the S.A.S. Nagar police have written to the district authorities to take strict action against those failing to furnish information regarding tenants and servants.

In a communication to Roopnagar Deputy Commissioner Kulbir Singh Sidhu, the S.A.S. Nagar Superintendent of Police, Bacchan Singh Randhawa, has sought imposition of Section 144 of the CrPC so that house-owners can be booked under Section 188 for non-compliance of orders on giving details of tenants and servants. However, the SP has not mentioned the circumstances which warrant imposition of Section 144 in the township.

Two months ago, an announcement on loudspeakers for furnishing such information, followed by drum-beating, was made jointly by the police and the SDM office. Only 10 to 15 landlords came forward with details, according to police records.

Meanwhile, the District Commissioner has sought the opinion of S.A.S. Nagar SDM M.P. Arora on the law and order situation in the sub-division. Arora told Newsline that the SP’s demand was under consideration and the latter would soon be approached to ascertain the circumstances under which the imposition of Section 144 was required.

"I am not in favour of creating panic. We will jointly organise a mass contact programme in and around the town by involving prominent citizens," he added. He said Section 144 was used under specific circumstances and its imposition in the present circumstances was not justified.
