This is indeed a day for all secular forces around the world to celebrate the Congress victory. Granted, the Congress has to remove a few bad apples from its own organisation, but nevertheless it is a victory for freedom. The Maharashtra verdict is a victory for the common, hardworking people of India and for the democratic process that guarantees safety and peace to the good people of this world.

Caste-ing doubts
8226; The order of the caste panchayat in Asanda, Haryana, directing dissolution of Sonia8217;s marriage to Rampal and asking the married couple to live as brother and sister is an unfortunate development which must be condemned by all right thinking persons 8216;The truth about Sonia, IE, October 18. The ruling of the panchayat that marriage cannot get social acceptance is totally irrational, unconstitutional and without any legal basis. All this smacks of a medieval mindset, never mind that we claim the 21st century to be India8217;s century. The bold stand taken by Sonia must be appreciated and we expect her husband to continue to show guts and stand by her. The district administration and the state government must act fast before the situation deteriorates. Such anti-social elements must be strictly dealt with and these panchayats restrained.

Reading JP8217;s mind
8226; In an otherwise well-written article 8216;An unlikely hero8217; IE, October 12 on JP, rightly calling him 8216;8216;one of India8217;s greatest leaders8217;8217;, Kuldip Nayar has wrongly blamed the RSS for wrecking the Janata Party. The statement that JP 8216;8216;had permitted its members to join the movement on the premise that they would sever their links with the RSS8217;8217; is not proved by facts. At that time this was not the issue but to agitate against the dictatorial actions of Indira Gandhi. In fact, Nayar has used an excuse and alibi to absolve the real culprits who were responsible for wrecking the Janata Party. It was Charan Singh who, wanting to fulfil his desire of becoming prime minister, fell to the machinations of the Congress.

With a red pencil
8226; This refers to Comrade Harkishen Singh Surjeet8217;s article 8216;For whom the red bells toll8217;, IE, October 16. It amuses me that he uses the same arguments against people appointed during the NDA regime as he used in defence of the likes of Romila Thapar. The right to assign somebody the status of intellectual or great person that the communists have arrogated to themselves is amusing and at the same time disgusting.
