Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has plans to visit Shankar Netralaya during his stay in Guwahati, and though it is run by a trust headed by the Shankracharya of Kanchi, he made it clear he saw no contradiction in visiting the place while the Shankaracharya is under arrest. ‘‘There is no contradiction. Shankar Netralaya is a good institution and has been doing good work,” he told reporters before leaving for Guwahati.

Arrest ‘painful’

NEW DELHI: Describing Kanchi Shankaracharya Jayendra Saraswati’s arrest as ‘‘painful’’, Hindu spiritual leader Mata Amritanandamayi on Sunday hoped that the seer’s ‘‘ordeal’’ passes off as a ‘‘bad dream’’. ‘‘It is painful to learn about the arrest of the Kanchi acharya. It seems like a bad dream and may it continue to be nothing more than that…,’’ she said.

Won’t move SC for bail

CHENNAI: The Kanchi seer has instructed his lawyers not to move Supreme Court against the order of the Madras HC, according to V. Krishnaswamy, his advocate, who meets Jayendra Saraswati every evening in the prison. Krishnaswamy reportedly persuaded the acharya to agree to the appeal but he firmly ruled out that course of action.
