Prime Minister Vajpayee, Dy PM L.K. Advani and Leader of the Opposition Sonia Gandhi will meet here on Monday to select the country’s Chief Vigilance Commissioner in place of N. Vittal.

The names of P. Shankar, secretary in the planning commission and two other serving secretaries in the govt, J.N.L. Srivastava and Dipanker Basu are being mentioned for the top post.

Shanker is a front-runner for the coveted post though AIADMK chief and Tamil Nadu CM J. Jayalalithaa has hinted at her opposition to his appointment through intermediatories. The 3-member selection committee will also pick two other Vigilance Commissioners as envisaged in the CVC Ordinance. Vittal’s four-year term is coming to an end on September 2 and his colleague V.S. Mathur had retired a few months ago.

The police said the trio from Chandigarh — Rohan (21), Sumit (22), and Mohit (19) — were dhol players by profession and had procured the weapons due to an old rivalry with local residents.
