The BJP has said the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh did not give the “right signal” by not visiting Tawang during his tour of Arunachal Pradesh.

“We are deeply concerned about Prime Minister omitting visit to Tawang during his trip to Arunachal Pradesh. It is a matter of serious concern,” BJP spokesperson Ravishankar Prasad said on Thursday, the day Singh began his visit to the state.

Prasad said Tawang had symbolic and historical significance as several Indian soldiers laid down their lives during the 1962 war with China and a visit by the Prime Minister was all the more important as China was laying claim on it.

“In this context, the Prime Minister omitting Tawang in his itinerary is a matter of great concern and the BJP thoroughly disapproves of it,” he said.

Prasad also asked the Government to take into account security apprehensions expressed by the Coast Guard Director General about the proposed Sethusamudram project. “The BJP is not against the Sethusamudram project. But if the senior-most official of the Coast Guard is talking about security concerns, it is a big thing,” he added.
