CALCUTTA, Aug 15: “Those who want to topple the present Vajpayee government with the help of some blackmailers who are trying to achieve their selfish political ends, will themselves become victims of blackmail in the long run,” fumed Jagatguru Sankaracharya of Dwarka and Joshimutt, who is spending the holy festival of chaturmasa in Calcutta.

The Sankaracharya, who turns 75 this month, expressed anguish at the state of affairs in the country. “It’s true that the Vajpayee government is not doing very well, but what is the alternative? The coalition that will come in its place will also fall apart in a year’s time. Can the country afford to have general elections every second year?” he asked.

Advising politicians to rise above petty interests and work towards making India stronger and more prosperous, the Jagatguru said he retains faith in the Vajpayee government and it should be allowed to serve its full term.Commenting on the relationship between religion and politics in the country, the Sankaracharyasaid politicians try to exploit godmen and heads of religious sects.

“They come to us and seek our blessings with the hope that they can remain in office for ages,” he said. “They think we are fools. But I understand what they want and I drive away all such politicians.”

On the Babri Masjid, he said, “I didn’t accept it as a mosque because historical evidence shows that it was originally a Hindu temple. Secondly, it was not being used for prayers for a long time. And a place which is not used for prayers cannot be called a mosque.” The Jagatguru, who keeps a copy of the Quran Sharif, added, “But I strongly condemn the demolition of the structure. It was a heinous crime to finish the building.”
