NEW DELHI, Aug 4: The Samajwadi Party member, Phoolan Devi, today threatened self-immolation in the Lok Sabha if attempts were made by the Mayawati government in Uttar Pradesh to reopen cases against her.
“I will self-immolate if I am not allowed to lead a normal life in the society,” a visibly moved Phoolan Devi stated during Zero Hour.
Recalling the cases lodged against her by the Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh government in the early eighties, she said that she had already spent 11 years in jail without trial after she surrendered in 1983. Rising in support of the Samajwadi member, Bhagwati Devi of Janata Dal said Phoolan Devi was not getting justice merely because she was a harijan and asked her to take up the rifle again. “Lift your rifle again, I will be with you,” Bhawati Devi said.
