US singers join anti-mine campaign
US rock and folk stars Sheryl Crow and Nanci Griffith are the latest big names to visit Cambodia as flag bearers for the international campaign to ban landmines, aid workers said Monday. The Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation VVAF said the pair, who arrived in Phnom Penh on Sunday, were scheduled to spend four daystouring rehabilitation projects for landmine victims. 8220;My hope is to bring attention to the fact that worldwide 22 people a minute are being killed or maimed by landmines and people in the world, such as myself three of four years ago, didn8217;t even know what a landmine was,8221; Crow told the English-language Cambodia Daily. Artistes such as Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle and Bruce Cockburn have visited Cambodia in the past with the VVAF. Last year Jordan8217;s Queen Noor and violinist Vannessa Mae also toured here as flag bearers for the international campaign to ban landmines.

Australian hero8217;s skull to return
A man who stole the skull of legendary outback outlaw Ned Kelly from a police exhibit 22 years ago has decided to give it back, but wants it to have a proper burial and a posthumous pardon for Kelly. Tom Baxter who stole the skull from an exhibit in the old Melbourne jail in 1978 unveiled the trophy for The Australian newspaper and said he would like to see it buried in Victoria. ButBaxter also wants a committee of eminent Australians to promote Kelly8217;s cause.

Kelly, who was portrayed by Mick Jagger in a 1970 film, is one of Australia8217;s greatest folk heroes. Renowned for using metal suits to protect himself from police bullets, Kelly became a symbol of the Australian rebel character by leading his gang in a series of bank robberies and horse thefts. But he was captured during a siege in the Victorian town of Glenrowan in 1879 and later hanged.

Baxter said he took the skull after seeing it hanging in the old jail. 8220;I8217;ve got an Irish background myself, and I must say I was rather appalled on the day when I first went into Melbourne jail and saw all those remains on display,8221; he said. 8220;I pinched it to protest about the way it was being used wrongfully as a police trophy.8221;
