PUNE, July 30: Relenting under pressure, the Pune Cantonment Board PCB today agreed to release the handcarts confiscated by its officials as part of a major encroachment removal drive during this month.
The board, however, made it clear that henceforth handcarts confiscated by the board for creating nuisance on the roads will not be returned. A resolution to this effect was passed at the general board meeting.
The PCB had agreed to earmark a separate zone for handcarts to reduce congestion on the roads. However, during the discussion at the meeting, board president, Brig. Madan Gopal, made it clear that he was not in favour of setting up permanent stalls or kiosks for handcart owners. He was emphatic that the board will have to adopt a strict attitude against handcarts, which will not be permitted on roads. The carts were released on payment of Rs. 500 as fine. The board had confiscated 68 handcarts.
Member Ashok Pawar8217;s request to cantonment executive officer J. Sharma to permit handcarts to operate after 7 p.m. was turned down on the ground that handcart owners continue to make a nuisance on the roads and do not adhere to the norms laid down by the board.
Brig Madan Gopal revealed that the elected members had inspected a number of sites for setting up a zone but these were yet to be inspected by him.
The board decided to cordon off Abaji Maidan to prevent encroachments on it. The ground had found itself amid a major controversy when the board selected it as an alternative site for the M.G. Road hawkers.
The board has decided to install dustbins between vegetable stalls in Chhatrapati Shivaji Market to prevent the waste from being thrown on the streets. A promotion committee has been formed to consider the question of filling up vacancies for the post of headmasters or headmistresses in cantonment schools. The committee will comprise the board president, members Shrikant Mantri, Ashok Pawar and Col. A G Joshi. At present, there are vacancies in Mahadji Shinde High School and Dr. Ambedkar High School.
