PUNE, June 29: The president of the Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) Brig Madan Gopal today made it clear that the controversial `Pay and park’ scheme at M G Road would continue.

The much debated issue had come up for discussion at the board meeting held here following its expiry after a three month trial period. The elected members initially opposed the scheme on the grounds that it was highly inconvenient for regulars who had to pay twice or thrice during the day only because they had to leave M G Road for work elsewhere.

Board president Brig Madan Gopal however remained firm and attempted to explain the various advantages of the scheme to the elected members. “From what I understand about this scheme is that it not only provides for security of the vehicles, but has also introduced a semblance of discipline and orderliness on M G Road,” he explained.

The members, who were however in no mood to listen, submitted a note of dissent to the president who then stated that he would use his special powers under Section 51 of the Cantonments Act of 1924 to override their submission. On his request, all the elected members except vice president Vinod Sanghvi later withdrew their dissent note on the scheme. The cantonment board which discussed the issue of renewal of trade licenses has decided to put on hold the licenses of Hotel Aurora Towers, Mona Hotels Ltd for violating the cantonment building byelaws. Cantonment executive officer J Sharma said that a final decision would be taken after a complete site inspection report was submitted on the matter.
