Lots of us are dying for a spot of supernatural direction, it seems. Besides astrology, tarot and the works, take the buzz about past life therapy and our need to know.
I was tempted too, by the nadi josiyar, by my friend8217;s astrologer, by the tarot reader. But unlike those lucky ones? who came away saying, 8220;Gosh, they were bang on!8221; none of these encounters really helped me. The nadi guys in Delhi couldn8217;t find 8220;my8221; life despite three hours of looking through their palmleaf manuscripts. The astrologer, of spiritual lineage from a famous holy place in South India, said things I politely listened to but didn8217;t connect with. The tarot reader made predictions that were wide off the mark.
This doesn8217;t mean we know it all or don8217;t feel frightened and disconsolate about aspects of our lives. Every one of us needs comfort and strength through our predicaments, don8217;t we? Some devils are within us 8212; too much tamas perhaps, that keeps us inert, disorganised or bad-tempered? Some things seem circumstantial 8212; unsatisfactory situations, disasters of birth, accidents, the lack of right people at work or home. Most of all, we need to find friends, fellow human beings who wish us well, support us when we stumble and whom we can call at odd hours for company and consolation.
How would astrology and past life therapy explain such people? How would past life therapy explain why your peon is forgetful, your plumber is a Sloppy Joe, your flower boy is such a doll and slips you extra free red carnations because they8217;re your favourite? I mean, pursue the notion to its logical end. Was the peon hit on the head last time round, were the plumber8217;s hands amputated in his last life, did 8220;I8221; give the phoolwala free jalebis as someone else, that he8217;s paying me back now? With due respect to those trying to lift the Veil, I8217;d say, lay off, just try to practise awareness and 8216;lovingkindness8217; in what you say and do; pray quietly to benign Providence to steer your ship across. There8217;s really no other way.
