The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) activists are up against the opening of retail chains like the Reliance Fresh while one of their leaders, who is also a former MLA, is busy supplying vegetables to the Reliance outlets.

Alpha Agrics Pvt Ltd, promoted by IUML leader T P M Sahir, is one of the regular suppliers of cut (ready-to-cook) vegetables to Reliance Fresh. The company is housed at Kinfra’s food park at Kakkanchery in Malappuram. “We are opposing only the foreign entities. Reliance and other Indian retail stores can help address the issue of unemployment. Hence, we should support them,” said Sahir.

The IUML activists, however, have been holding anti-Reliance demonstrations at Mukkom for the past one month. Last week, party General Secretary P K Kunhalikutty even addressed the agitators and warned against the possible dangers of allowing the retail majors in the market. Another protest meeting was held in Kottakkal last week by the Edarikkodu panchayat committee of its youth league to spread awareness against a retail chain’s bid to open store there.

When cornered on the Mukkom agitation, Sahir said: “The agitation at Mukkom is of local nature. It is against the company’s bid to open an outlet without the permission of local body there.”
