Two die in separate road mishaps in Chandigarh within 24 hours

Two people, including a 16-year-old boy and a 40-year-old man, died in separate road accidents in Chandigarh within 24 hours, with police launching investigations after a motorcycle crash and a school bus collision.

A teenager and a middle-aged man died in Chandigarh in two separate road accidents within 24 hours, police said on Friday.

The teenager identified as Vivek Kumar (16) died on Friday after his motorcycle crashed, police said. The man, Dwarka Prasad Yadav (40), died Thursday afternoon after a school bus hit his scooter.

Vivek, who worked at a dairy in Pinjore, crashed his motorcycle into a footpath near the Sector-17 Cricket Stadium Chowk at around 5 am.

Police said two of his friends — Raju (17) and Rahul (18) — who were riding pillion, were injured.

The trio was returning from a late-night party and no one had a helmet on, police said.
Vivek and Rahul suffered serious injuries, while Raju sustained minor injuries. Police rushed them to the hospital in Sector-16, where the doctors declared Vivek dead. The bike belonged to one of their friends, Karan, who brought them to Chandigarh the previous night.

In another accident that took place on Thursday afternoon, a 40-year-old man was killed after a school bus hit his scooter in Mauli Jagran.

The victim — Dwarka Prasad Yadav — was a resident of Mauli Charan Singh Colony, who sold bread and eggs on a cart.

Police said Prasad was riding towards Rajiv Colony Road in the afternoon when a private school bus struck his scooter. He was critically injured. Passersby rushed him to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

The bus driver fled the spot, leaving the vehicle behind, police said.

A few students, who were inside the bus at the time, were later sent home in another vehicle. Police have seized the school bus and the scooter, and are conducting raids to trace the driver.
