
Legendary painter and a pioneer of the Indian modern art movement, Paritosh Sen, died here on Wednesday evening, doctors attending him said. The 90-year-old artist was admitted to a hospital on September 5 with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and had been on a ventilator since. He is survived by his wife.
Born in 1918 in a renowned family of Ayurvedic doctors in Dhaka, Sen did his schooling from Pogose. A founder of the 8220;Calcutta Group8221; of artistes in 1943, Sen left for Europe in 1949 where he studied art at Andre Lahote8217;s school in Paris, besides the Academie Grand Chaumier, Ecole 8212; the Beaux Arts and Ecole des Louvres where he studied art history. It was here that he met Pablo Picasso who left a lasting impression on him. After he returned to Calcutta in 1954, Sen joined Netarhat School near Ranchi to earn a living but later he returned to Calcutta to join the School of Printing Technology as a professor of design and layout.
In the early sixties, Sen visited England and France, where the French government commissioned him to design the Bengali typography based on the script of Rabindranath Tagore. Sen8217;s body will be kept at the Lalit Kala Academy for three hours since 10.30 a.m. on Thursday for his admirers to pay their last respects. 8212; PTI
