SURAT, July 7: The agitating parents called off the fast-unto-death late on Monday night after Tayebiah Maderasah Society agreed to roll back the fee hike this and the previous years. With the district collector and the district education officer intervening, the parents and the management reached the agreement and both the Gujarati and English medium schools of the society began classes on Tuesday. The parents had begun the fast on Monday morning after their talks with the management failed despite the DC and DEO's intervention earlier. The parents had demanded that the fees should be brought down to Rs 110 a month from Rs 170 in the primary schools and Rs 225 in the nurseries, while the management maintained the hike was necessary to run the schools.Led by Asad Kalyani, some 25 parents had sat outside the school at Zampa Bazaar from Monday after the management refused. After the deal, the fasting group said the management had agreed to fix the fees in both the English and Gujarati primary schools at Rs 155 a month. In addition, the computer fees will now be optional. The management will also not charge the monthly maintenance fee of Rs 15, which was described as illegal by DEO.Several parents and other leaders celebrated the ``moral victory'' outside the school. The Collector, when contacted, said he had also asked for audit reports of the last two years, which the society had not submitted despite the DEO's directives.
