KOCHI, AUG 5: Panic and alarm gripped Ernakulum South railway station after a signal goof-up on Wednesday morning caused the Venad Express to proceed on the wrong track. Coming days after the Gaisal disaster, railway officials are red-faced. The Assistant Station Master, the cabin man and the drivers have been suspended.
Though the train was bound for Shornur from Platform No 3, the signal system and track settings were such that it changed track and headed for Kottayam. Fortunately, the driver realised the mistake when he reached the outer cabin and brought the train back to the platform.
The Thiruvananthapuram-bound Kerala Express was also expected at the same time setting off panic. Tension eased when the Kerala Express pulled in on another track. The Divisional Safety Officer of the Railways has been asked to conduct an inquiry.
quot; The drivers of the Venad Express didn8217;t watch the signal carefully before starting the train. Had they taken a closer look, this could have been avoided, quot; a top Railwayofficial said.
Whenever the signal is given, a corresponding letter indicating the direction will also be displayed on the post. While S8217; stands for the way to Shornur direction, M8217; indicates Marshalling Yard and the Kottayam route. quot; They the Venad Express drivers failed to notice this, quot; the official said.
No traffic was disrupted at the station.
