YAVATMAL, July 3: The sarpanch of Rui Gram Panchayat, Kazi Altaf Ali, has been booked by the rural police on charge of setting afire his wife who could not bring the dowry.

Ali’s wife Raziya died due to serious burn injuries recently. The police had earlier registered a case of an accidental death. However, brother of the deceased, Mirza Ahmad Baig, lodged a complaint with the police alleging that his sister was murdered by her husband and in-laws for dowry.

Accordingly, local police officer Aniruddha Adhav ordered a fresh probe into the matter, after which, they reached the conclusion that Raziya did not meet with an accident but was burnt alive by her husband and in-laws as she failed to fulfill their dowry demand for Rs 15,000.

Police have booked Kazi Ali, his mother Aabedabee, father Shafakat Ali, Hoor Begum and Farzana Begam after registering a criminal offence under Sections 34, 306 and 498 of the Indian Penal Code against them.

They were produced before the court and remanded to the magisterialcustody till July 15.

According to the relatives of deceased Raziya, attempts were made to hush up the matter as the accused was an influential political leader of the village.MISHAP: Two youths hailing from Talegaon Dasharar village in Amravati district died on spot when the a private travel agency bus coming from the opposite direction knocked the motorcycle they were riding near Karalgaon diversion, about 10 kms away from here, recently.

The irate mob set the bus on fire and the police who rushed to the spot arrested the driver Mirza Wajeed Baig.
