The CD purportedly containing evidence of King Gyanendra8217;s involvement in a plot to eliminate prominent political leaders of Nepal has turned out to be only a collection of newpaper reports, according to a source in the Parliament Secretariat.

Maoist deputy parliamentary leader Prabhakar had handed over the CD to the Speaker last week, claiming it contained details of a conspiracy funded by the king and being overseen by crown prince Paras. The Maoists alleged that the Palace had spent Rs 600 million on the plot and had tried to rope in the army for its implementation.

Two days ago, a PowerPoint presentation was made for members of the Business Advisory Committee of the Nepalese Parliament by its Secretary General Surya Kiran Gurung, under instructions from Speaker Subhash Nembwang.

8220;The CD contained 63 newspaper clippings besides the annual reports of a human-rights organisation,8221; the source said.

The CD episode followed another allegation labelled publicly by Maoist chief Prachanda that the palace was conspiring to kill some US officials posted in Kathmandu so that the blame could be pinned on the Maoists. Challenged by US Ambassador James Moriarty to share information with the authorites about this, Prachanda had said he would collect the information and make it public.

8220;Parliament will not pursue the CD case further, but members would need to be more responsible in making accusations in future,8221; said a Parliament Secretariat official.
