Akhtar Ali: He is very much a part of South Club. He’s also a great patriot and must be itching to play the world group qualifying tie against netherlands

Naresh Kumar: I’ve spoken to leander several times over the past two days. Last night he seemed a bit subdued. I tried to cheer him up. As the conversion went on, his spirits lifted and we had a good laugh.

‘‘He is no longer experiencing headaches and his vision is normal. He remains in excellent spirits and is physically active’’, hospital CEO Dr Clarence Brown said.

Hospital spokesperson, Michelle Lynch, while expressing amazement at the innumerable calls she received from all over since Paes was admitted, informed that he was able to perform yoga and said his his appetite is ‘‘excellent.’’

Brown, who is co-ordinating the treatment along with a team of four doctors, said ‘‘We are inclined to believe it is a small abscess caused by an infectious agent yet to be identified. Test results are pending and are likely to be available during the day or tommorrow. Leander, meanwhile, remains in excellent spirits and is physically active,’’ he informed ‘‘If it is an infection, he will be treated with antimicrobials and he should be able to resume his professional career in a matter of weeks. He is on antibiotics for a possible brain abscess,’’ he added.

Brown also mooted the possibility — as mentioned in The Indian Express on Thursday — that Leander could be suffering from cysticercus granuloma, caused by the larval form of a tapeworm. It usually comes from eating infected meat and is common in India.

Back home it was a sigh of relief for the Paes’ family as hospital sources conveyed the message ‘‘ Leander is in excellent spirits. Condition stable.’’ Dr. Vece Paes, who was to catch the flight to the US late Thursday night, sounded relieved ‘‘that’s some news,’’ and said ‘‘let’s hope nothing more is wrong.’’ Long time partner Mahesh Bhupathi, who is currently in New York, when asked if he ever noticed Lee ‘uneasy’, the Bangalorean informed in the negative.

Did he meet him? ‘‘I have tried phoning him at the hospital but did not get through. The lines were busy,’’ said Bhupathi.
