May 12: Over 80 final year ayurveda students taking the BAMS course of the University of Mumbai have been permitted to take a re-examination of the practical exam conducted in November 1999 following complaints that their papers had been evaluated wrongly. The re-exam has been scheduled for June.

According to a circular dated May 9, 2000, the university states that the results they obtain in the re-examination will be considered along with the marks obtained in other subjects in the November 1999 exam to calculate their aggregate.

Supported by the National Students Union of India (NSUI), the students had been petitioning the university for a re-exam since February 11. They had pointed out that some of the questions they were asked during the practical exam were irrelevant to the subject, Shalakya Tantra. The three-member Bhole Committee, constituted on April 19 to inquire into their grievances, submitted its report on May 3. The univeersity states that every student who had failed in that subject will be allowed to take the re-exam.
