MUMBAI, SEPT 11: Weather continued to play spoilsport on the third day of The Famous Grouse All India and South Asia Rugby Tournament at the Bombay Gymkhana. Both the matches of the day, were played under conditions not conducive to rugby.
Both the matches were totally one-sided. It was experience versus inexperience. And it showed. Maharashtra State Police thrashed debutants. The Cathedral and John Connon school, Mumbai 67-0 after leading 33-0 at the half-way stage.
In the other matches, South India Combine, a team comprising of players from Bangalore, Chennai, Pondicherry and a few ex-pats from Kenya, dominated play to trample Orissa Rugby Football Association 77-0 after leading 46-0 at the breather.
There were a lot of similarities in the matches. Both the winners had experience on their side while their opponents were first timers MSP and South India were constantly on attack and scored at will. Cathedral and Orissa were forced to defend but lack of experience found them not up to the mark incontaining their opponents.
Add to this was the trecherous ground conditions. Also, the continuous drizzle made catching and passing the ball difficult.
For South India, Raymond Shaw led the scoring with three tries and three conversions. Others who did well were Jeffry Maronha 2 tries, 3 conversion, Guy Farley 2 tries, Satish 2 tries.
