8226;The recent incidents involving Raj Thackeray are nothing short of farcical. All the characters in this drama have vested interests. Raj Thackeray is trying to score political points. Big B tenders an apology when none was warranted because his films are under threat. The politicians are worse. The chief minister won8217;t act, neither will his ministers of the NCP. That leaves the media, which I feel should black out MNS totally. No point in wasting print space for such a maniac.

8226; Raj Thackeray and his Maharashtra Navanirman Sena are nursing thoughts of being above the law and taking optimum advantage of the anarchy that prevails in Mumbai, thanks mainly to the inert state government. The latest salvo being the controversy over Jaya Bachchan8217;s remarks and those of JCP, Mumbai, K.L. Prasad. Why should one ignore one8217;s mother tongue just to appease a political mafia? Doesn8217;t the Constitution provide for freedom of thought and expression? Thackeray needs to draw a line between regionalism and regional aspirations.

In-House caution

8226; This is with reference to your editorial 8216;Punjab House rules8217; . You have promptly highlighted the possible adverse effect of policing by the state assembly. Expert opinion 8212; that only in the rarest of rare cases should a member be expelled by the state assembly 8212; should be heeded. The assembly should concentrate on passing bills, discussing development.

Red challenge

8226; It is better late than never. I welcome and support the government8217;s announcement of a comprehensive and concentrated plan to tackle the Maoist/Naxalite problem 8216;Helipads to roads8230;8217; . The Naxalites have created a 8220;Red Corridor8221;, running from Andhra Pradesh to

Bihar, where it is their writ that runs, particularly in the rural areas.

The police and intelligence agencies cannot take this lightly. Compared to its large population, India8217;s police force is small. Recruitment of more police personnel may be one of the ways of tackling the challenge. At the same time, the governments at the Central and state levels should initiate a peace process through proper dialogue with the Maoist leaders so that the masses and policemen could be saved from the Maoists8217; wrath and their ghastly attacks.

Channel of death

8226; The story, 8216;Girl kills self, kin blames Doomsday rumours8217; , is yet another example of how the sensationalisation of a piece of news can go so wrong.
