8226; With oil at 70 per barrel, and power from atomic energy still a distant dream, it seems that India is better off importing gas. But getting gas from Iran, or through Afghanistan-Pakistan, is a project fraught with danger given the jihadi presence in the region. Bangladesh, too, appears uncooperative. Given this, it8217;s time we consider importing energy 8212; as gas or electric power 8212; from the CAS states, using Chinese roads. A point for Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar8217;s forthcoming visit to China!

Best of luck, CM
8226; This refers to the article, 8216;Left uses Suharto to snipe at Buddha8217; IE, August 28. Our communists have been always late to realise their follies, be it about English medium for education, or whatever. Though late, it is good that they have finally seen sense. The only problem is that by the time they realise things, a generation of people have been denied the opportunity to grow due to their dogmatic policies. These dogmas were shed by China, Russia, Romania, Czechoslovakia, a long time ago. These countries have now come to move with the times and the results are there for all to see. After emerging from the shadows of the Jyoti Basu era, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee is speaking out his mind and trying to steer his state to a better future. But will he be successful? I wish him all the best.

Strange notification
8226; It is heartening to note that to curb head injuries arising out of two-wheeler accidents, the Gujarat government in the interest of the general public has finally decided to make the wearing of helmets ompulsory from September 1. The government notification, however, exempts women and children below the age of 12 years, traveling as pillion riders, from wearing such helmets. The purpose of helmets is to save people from head injuries. It is a fact that pillion riders are more likely to incur head injuries than the driver. This being the case, how can the government exempt women from wearing helmets? Does the government thinks that women do not have heads or that their heads are of no value? Or is it that the government fears that religious outfits like VHP and Bajrang Dal will issue a sugreev agna like a fatwa against the practice of women wearing helmets? As a doctor, I request the state government to make the wearing of helmets compulsory for all those who ride on scooters, including children above three years.

Bad move
8226; Banning cycle rickshaws in Kolkata, as the West Bengal government proposes to do, is surely a case of putting the cart before the horse or the rickshaw before the puller 8216;End of the road8217;, IE, August 17! Improve the infrastructure and provide alternative jobs for the poor pullers before banning the rickshaws please! I lived in this city many years ago and know first-hand what a valuable service these rickshaw wallas provide.
