National Tiger Conservation Authority’s (NTCA) member-secretary Rajesh Gopal will visit areas around the Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR) on Tuesday to explore how the tiger-human conflict in the villages here can be checked.

The conflict, first reported by The Indian Express, has claimed 34 lives so far and has left nearly 25 injured. Most of the affected villages fall along the stretch between the Nagbhid to Mul ranges of the Chandrapur forests.

There are about 45 tigers in TATR and more than 22 in the areas outside. Chandrapur district as a whole is home to about 90 tigers.

Apparently, tigers from the source population have recently begun to travel to villages on the periphery of TATR’s buffer zone and harm humans.

The situation deteriorated when a tiger killed four people in a month last year, and under pressure from locals, the Forest Department had it shot by police sharpshooters.

Local politicians have been adding fuel to the fire by demanding action against the “tiger nuisance”, thus increasing the villagers’ antipathy towards the animal.
