Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala today showed that his bite could be worse than his bark when he suspended Bhasker Chatterjee, Financial Commissioner of the Town and Country Planning Department, for refusing to implement orders.

The Town and Country Planning Department has been under tremendous pressure to clear certain licences to colonisers besides giving Change of Land Use (CLUs) certificates. Sources said the officers refused to issue licences because of the model code of conduct.

Financial Commissioner, Food and Supplies, H. C. Disodia has been given the additional charge of the Tourism Department, while Financial Commissioner and Principal Secretary, Excise and Taxation, L S M Salins will hold the additional charge of Town and Country Planning Department. The government has also ordered that the special secretaries in finance department will exercise the powers of Secretary, Finance.

Sources said the order has come in the wake of Chatterjee’s refusal to buckle under the government’s pressure to clear certain controversial licences to colonisers besides granting CLUs to some parties in Gurgaon and Faridabad. The government wanted to allegedly push through at least two dozen CLUs and 30 licences to its favourites. But Chatterjee had put his foot down.
