Now Intel makes connecting to the Internet via wireless networks easier. Within Rs 1 lakh, the consumer may now just buy a laptop with Intel Centrino mobile technology or just spend around Rs 2,500 for a wireless local area network (WLAN) card to upgrade his old laptop. And the laptop will now, Intel claims, be completely wireless and also with a battery-life of 5 hours.
At a press meet in New Delhi, Intel commercially launched its mobile chips and processor technology, known as Centrino to enable computer manufacturers offer connectivity anytime and from anywhere.
Talking to The Indian Express, Intel director G.B. Kumar said, “though we did face some resistance to the idea from notebook suppliers, almost all top-notch companies including H-P, Dell Computer, IBM, HCL, Wipro, Acer, Samsung and Toshiba Corp will be offering products with the new technology.
Available in the market, Acer’s TravelMate 800 (with Centrino technology) is priced Rs 1.35 lakh upwards. HCL is still working out the pricing of Toshiba notebook computers and Wipro also is slated to launch it. Wi-Fi provides high-speed Internet access from fixed-position phone or cable television network lines.
Users of properly equipped laptops can gain access to the Internet, or potentially their own corporate network, if within 300 metres of a Wi-Fi access point.
Already, Wi-Fi is popular among home computer enthusiasts who can install a small antenna box in any room of the house to create a local network linking PCs and other home electronics. Analysts say wireless computer connections could create a sea change in the way computers are used.
