SURAT, June 8: Notorious criminal of the city Mukesh Kahar, who was earlier arrested under the Prevention of Anti-Social Activities (PASA) Act, was murdered by three people on Sunday, according to the Limbayat police. A dispute on collection of hafta is said to be the reason behind the murder.

Kahar, a resident of Vinoba Nagar slum in Limbayat, was found murdered by the police beside a canal in the adjoining Rajiv Nagar, with 26 stab wounds on his body. Kahar was assaulted by Yakub Patel and two of his associates Ayub Gando and Guliyo alias Ghulam Raj when he went to collect hafta from one Yakubbhai Yusuf Patel, residing at Rajiv Nagar slum. Yakub reportedly paid the hafta to run a brothel.

According to details, Kahar approached Yakub and demanded money. Yakub is reported to have told him that he no longer ran the business and hence would not pay. Arguments followed with both threatening each other with dire consequences, the police said. Immediately afterwards, Yakub was joined by Ayub Gando and Guliyo, who stabbed Kahar at least 26 times in the abdomen, chest and throat until he died. All three then escaped from the spot.

The Limbayat police arrested Yakub Patel and Guliyo alias Ghulam Bhavsingh Raj on Monday evening, while Gando was absconding. PSI M V Jhala of the Limbayat police station, who is investigating the case, told Express Newsline that both the arrested had confessed to the crime and will be produced in the court on Tuesday.
