While the expulsion of the officiating head of Pakistan8217;s diplomatic mission in New Delhi was unfortunate and Delhi Police8217;s pronouncements on the envoy may have been a little too hasty, yet the evidence so far at least, indicates that India was left with few options in the face of such ridiculously brazen Pakistani actions.
The source of funds on which the Hurriyat, not to mention jihadi terrorists, have been operating for a decade and a half, has long been a matter of speculation. The testimonies provided by Anjum Zamrooda Habib and the Hurriyat spokesman, Shabir Ahmad Dar that they acquired these funds from the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi now provides direct evidence that contrary to General Pervez Musharraf8217;s public posture that Pakistan8217;s support to the so-called freedom struggle in Jammu and Kashmir is only 8216;moral8217;, in fact Islamabad8217;s role in violent separatist movements in India is actively participatory.
After all, it is the ISI which has over the last two decades transformed Pakistan into the source of global terrorism in the name of jihad and pursued terrorism as an extension of foreign policy by other means. Differences between the Pakistani Foreign Office and ISI-led extremists are well known: not so long ago reports emerged indicating the increasing chasm between Pakistani diplomats and the the ISI-jihadi combine, on the future direction of their Kashmir policy.
Be that as it may, the often petty undiplomatic exchanges between India and Pakistan reflect how far away New Delhi remains from formulating a coherent Pakistan strategy.
Already there has been much criticism that South Block hurtles from crisis to crisis without managing to put in place a sustained and rational process of confidence-building on the one hand and tough policy initiatives on the other.
The acrimonious exchanges between governments and the diplomatic 8216;tu tu main main8217; should not be allowed to encroach on ongoing citzens8217; initiatives nor in trying to build a comprehensive long-term policy that will help future generations deal with our fractious western neighbour.
