SURAT, June 17: President of Surat District Bar Association Ashit Mehta, against whom some advocates sought to move a no-confidence motion, got a reprieve on Tuesday when the executive council opined that there was no provision in the association’s constitution for such a motion.
His fate will now be decided in the requisition meeting of the Bar to be held on Saturday. The executive council, which was to meet a couple of days ago, had put off its meeting to Tuesday saying that it needed time to study the constitution. The council members after studying the constitution said there was no provision either for expressing confidence or no confidence in the president.
Some members started gunning for Mehta’s post for what they call “mishandling” of an agitation launched to press for constructing a speedbreaker in front of the court building and for summer vacations. The fortnight-long strike for these twin issues was declared called off on June 8 by Mehta.
The Bar Association had met twice over the issue of withdrawal. When members were asked to raise the hands, 10 said they were against the withdrawal, while three said they were for it. Mehta maintained given that more than 100 members were present and only 10 raised their hands in the meeting meant a majority was against the strike and hence be called off.
Mehta’s stand was challenged by some members of the association who said Mehta was not fit to hold the president’s post and should be removed. But when they sought to move the no confidence motion, the council, dominated by Mehta’s supporters, sought for more time saying it needed time to study the constitution.
