MUMBAI, March 10: Shaken by protests from all quarters, the Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party Government today drastically cut the targets under the Small Savings Scheme (SSS).

“We have reduced the target from Rs 10,000 crore to Rs 4,500 crore for the current year. Besides, I have told all the officials that there should be absolutely no compulsion and that no one should be harassed for non-payment,” Chief Minister Manohar Joshi said today.

Admitting that there was misunderstanding and confusion over the scheme, Joshi said that now he had given specific instructions that small traders, teachers, students, salaried workers and self-employed persons should not be compelled to make contributions for the scheme.
