JANUARY 11: The Democratic Front government in Maharashtra has decided to appoint renowned educationist Dr Augustine Pinto as the new sheriff of Mumbai.

Pinto, whose name was recommended by the Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, would take the oath of office on January 19 at Raj Bhavan, official sources said.

Pinto replaces Chandrakant Bakshi, whose tenure expired in December.

Pinto runs a school for construction workers and slumdwellers at Panvel.
