CHENNAI, January 8: What is among Prime Minister I K Gujral's two most proud achievements during his tenure? ``I have given a new strength to unity of the nation,'' he declared on Thursday as one of his achievements.Replying to questions after delivering the inaugural speech of the Partnership Summit 1998 organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) at the Jawaharlal Indoor Stadium in Chennai, Gujral said, ``I could have saved my government by asking Murasoli Maran to go home, but that would have split the nation. It would have meant yielding to an irreversible, irrational and falacious charge that they (the Congress) made.''``Tamils need to feel part of India, just like the Sikhs need to feel part of India. I come from Punjab, from where the Sikhs come. And let met tell you that since the Mughal period, for the first time, the Sikhs' outlook towards Delhi has changed. And the United Front government under my chairmanship and under the chairmanship of my predecessor showed what unity was.''COALITION, FUTURE OF INDIA: Asked if coalition politics had worked in the country and if it could give a good economy, Gujral said ``I think we must draw a difference between stability and continuity. The Indian democracy is stable. Indian politics may not look stable. But, India's strength is its inherent stability.''``Four governments changed through the democratic process in the last couple of years. It was all constitutional. Even a govt which could not prove its strength bowed out, but nobody talked of extra-constitutional methods. There lay the strength of India,'' he added.
