Staying in a metropolitan city like Pune, most of us have broken our bonds with nature. Only a handful make any efforts towards the conservation of the environment, and many are under the false notion that conservation basically means obstructing development activities like dams or road widening.

In an effort to do my bit for this noble cause, I have checked out a few sites devoted to wildlife conservation. The site htpp:/wild.allindia.com/default.htm is a good-looking site. Its primary aim, as it says, is to help spread awareness of the need for wildlife conservation in India, to influence decision-makers, to encourage and influence innovative debate, to fight misinformation, amongst others. There are news flashes, articles and lots more.

The site indiatime.com/wildlife/wildlife.htm has many useful links to others sites, dealing with topics like the Indian attitude towards conservation, Save the Tiger Campaign, publications, institutes and even a wildlife and environment Who’s Who. The Who’s Who includes stalwarts like Dr Salim Ali, Jim Corbett, Sunderlal Bahuguna.

The Indian Wildlife Page at iucaa.iucaa,ernet.in/-ogesh/wildlife.html has reports pertaining to a number of wildlife reserves in India, birdlife in and around Pune and Mumbai, and even snakes in the University of Pune. This site also has photographs, stories and resource material for enthusiasts interested in forming a nature club. There are dozen of links to other wildlife sites around the world. You can even get the entire ornithological check list of India at wcmc.org.uk/igcmc/rl–amml/indbird,html.

Planning to visit any wildlife sanctuary in India but do not know where to get the related information? There’s htpp://allindia,com/wild/, but unfortunately none of the sanctuaries in Maharashtra have been represented in this list; / expressindia.com/travel/wild.htm also covers a number of sanctuaries and national parks in India.
