Nepal bars pro-Tibet American from scaling Everest

The Nepal Govt has deployed 25 security personnel on the Everest base camp to stop possible anti-China protests.

Nepal has restricted an American climber to scale the world’s highest peak Mt Everest after he was found carrying a ‘Free Tibet’ banner during a security check, just days ahead of planned ascent of Chinese climbers carrying the Olympic torch.

The government has deployed at least 25 security personnel including army men on the Everest base camp on their side to stop possible anti-China protests as China prepares to take the torch to the Everest during the opening of the Beijing Olympics.

According to officials, the government has been watching movements on the Everest in a sensitive manner on request by China.

The American climber, member of Eco-Everest Expedition 2008, was sent back to Kathmandu, officials said.

Meanwhile, the Home Ministry has refuted the media reports that shoot at sight order were issued against Tibetan protestors during the Olympic torch relay saying they were ‘baseless and fabricated’.

However, it said, the government has made arrangements to prohibit any sort of protests in the Nepalese territory regarding the Olympic torch that will be taken to the top of the Everest by Chinese athletes.
