Tamil nationalist leader Pazha Nedumaran was today detained under the POTA, on charges of promoting the cause of the banned LTTE.

The 11th LTTE supporter to be detained under the terror act, he has been remanded to judicial custody till August 28 and taken to the Cuddalore prison.

MDMK leader Vaiko and eight of his associates besides another follower of Nedumaran, Paavanan, are the others imprisoned for their pro-LTTE stance.

Nedumaran was picked up from his residence at Alwarpet at around 9.25 p.m. and taken to the residence of L Rajendran, the designated POTA court judge, in Perambur.

Nedumaran, president of Tamizhar Desiya Iyakkam, said in a statement: ‘‘We anticipated that POTA would be used against Tamil nationalists. If this term in the jail is for my attempts to bring together Tamils across the world, then I joyfully accept it. Oppressive measures don’t triumph.’’ His lawyer Chandrasekaran put in a plea that he be kept in Chennai in view of his heart condition.

Nedumaran was moved to the Central prison here but at 11.30 pm was driven to Cuddalore. Apparently the government wants to prevent any crowds of Eelam supporters gathering before the prison here.

He has been charged under POTA for speaking in support of the LTTE and also arranging meetings in which such speeches were made. The Unlawful Activities Act, 1967 has also been invoked against him.
