NDA-backed presidential nominee Bhairon Singh Shekhawat on Saturday accepted defeat with “all humility” and said he would continue to work for unity and integrity of the country.
Announcing his resignation, he added he would continue to “work for the uplift of poor and deprived sections of society so that they can enjoy their fundamental rights with dignity”.
Shekhawat’s spokesperson Sushma Swaraj said “the right to contest cannot be denied” and she did not consider the electoral defeat as a political setback. “In all direct contests, margins have been much higher and we are happy about the performance,” she said after the results were declared.
She also made it clear that the NDA would not give the vice-presidentship on a platter to the ruling combine. NDA leaders are meeting here on Sunday to finalise their candidate for the vice-presidential election.
Names doing the rounds are sitting MP and farmer leader Sharad Joshi and former Rajya Sabha chairperson Najma Heptullah.
