CHENNAI, SEPT 15: While the Bharatiya Janata Party and its allies’ demand for the Bihar Government’s dismissal is becoming strident, another party friendly with the BJP, the National Conference, today stoutly opposed the use of Article 356 against any state government.

Two constituents of the BJP-led coalition, the Lok Shakti and Shiromani Akali Dal, have openly opposed any move to disturb the Rabri Devi Government in Bihar.

National Conference leader and Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah today said the party was for scrapping Article 356. He went on to declare he would abrogate the constitutional provision if he were the prime minister.

“At the end of five years, let the people decide whether they have to keep the government or not”, Abdullah said, responding to a query on the increasing demand for the Rabri Devi Government’s dismissal.

“When the Gujral and Gowda governments were destabilised, I was against it”, he pointed out, condemning the Opposition moves to destabilise theVajpayee government. “Give them (the Vajpayee Government) time to work”, he added.

The Chief Minister also said he would not allow the removal of Article 370, providing special status to Kashmir (This has long been a BJP demand).

Asked if he was happy with the performance of the BJP-led Government, he said no chief minister could be totally happy with the Centre as they “always needed more (Central) funds”.

CHENNAI: The Sheikh of Kashmir, Farooq Abdullah, today said in lighter vein that he wished to become the Prime Minister of India.

Voicing his opposition to the use of Article 356 against state governments, The J&K Chief Minister said: “I would like to knock out Article 356 into your sea. But I am not the Prime Minister. I hope one day I am the Prime Minister”.

At this, Defence Minister George Fernandes, who arrived alongwith Farooq Abdullah at the Chennai airport to participate in the MDMK’s Renaissance rally, appeared amused.

Next, it was Fernandes’ turn to bethe butt of Abdullah’s jokes. “George, you’re a Defence Minister. You still have not given me a free ride in the frigate”, he said.
