As the countdown begins for the opening of the Nathu La trade route with China on July 6, tight security measures have been put in place to avoid any untoward incidents. Only residents of East Sikkim district where the pass is located would be allowed to cross over to the other side for the time being and carry on trading activities till further decisions are taken. From China, only residents of the adjoining district in the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) would be granted permission to come to India.
Chinese traders will have to return on the same day they reach India but their Indian counterparts would be able to stay as long as 30 days in and around Rinquinga falling under TAR where the trade mart is located.
Sources explained that the volume of trade was expected to be enhanced gradually after more items are included on the list. Currently, India has agreed to a total of 44 items, including 15 on the import and 29 on the export list. Only sixty vehicles would be permitted to cross over to India and vice versa during the entire season till September-end. ‘‘As trade picks up, these arrangements can be altered to suit requirements. The situation can be gauged and an estimate formed in a few months after trade begins,’’ sources said.
There was apprehension among state government officials that there could be an influx of refugees into the state once the pass is opened but sources ruled out such a scenario since strict vigil would be maintained. A battalion of the ITBP would be posted at Nathula with similar arrangements on the Chinese side.
Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling and the the TAR Governor are expected to inaugurate the trade route on both sides of the border at 7:30 am on July 6.
