Diwan Asghar Nabi enjoyed considerable clout with VIPs back home. Since coming here from Uttar Pradesh several years ago, Nabi established himself at the NIS, Patiala and built a home near Sular village, close to the institute.
Though only a contract employee, he became close to top administrators and politicos and was publicly honoured by prominent persons. About five years back, the then Patiala Deputy Commissioner Jasbir Singh Bir recommended that he be honoured for distinguished services at the Republic Day function at the Yadavindra Public Stadium.
In an interview with this paper last July, Nabi had claimed that he had been providing physiotherapy support to the national athletes and members of the Indian hockey team who had been attending training camps at the NIS, Patiala.
Impressed by his services the members of the Indian hockey team including captain Dilip Tirkey had placed on record his services and had also suggested to the NIS authorities that Nabi8217;s services be made available whenever training camp was held here. Among others who lauded Nabi8217;s services were chief coach Rajinder Singh Junior. He accompanied the national athletes to Bangkok for the World Junior Athletic Championship and also went to Philippines for the Asian Senior Championship in 2005. He was also honoured by Randhir Singh, secretary general of the Indian Olympic Association IOA during the Indo-Pak Punjab Games in December 2004 and was presented a memento by local MP Parneet Kaur, wife of Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh.
