OEIRAS (PORTUGAL), April 8: Sixth-seed Austrian Thomas Muster advanced to the second round after defeating unseeded Romanian Dinu Pescariu 7-5, 6-1 in the first round of the $ 625,000 Estoril Open.
Muster, a clay-court specialist ranked 30th in the world, won the Estoril Open in 1995 and 1996.Morocco’s Karim Alami surprised seventh-seeded Francisco Clavet of Spain 6-4, 6-3.Czech Jiri Novak struggled early against Hicham Arazi of Morocco but blanked Arazi in the second set and won 4-6, 6-0, 7-6 (7-3). Italian Andrea Gaudenzi edged Spaniard Galo Blanco 7-6 (7-4), 6-4.Czech Slava Dosedel withdrew from the competition with a back injury when he was 6-1, 3-0 down against Tomas Nydahl of Sweden.
The top two seeds, Spaniards Felix Mantilla and Carlos Moya, were scheduled to play their first-round matches today.

AMELIA ISLAND, FLORIDA: Monica Seles joined defending champion Lindsay Davenport and Anna Kournikova as first round winners at the Bausch and Lomb women’s tennischampionships yesterday.
Jennifer Capriati also won her first-round match, beating Lilia Osterloh 6-4, 6-2. Seles, making her first appearance ever in the tournament, justified her No 3 seeding by winning 6-3, 1-2 (retired). Babel was forced to retire after the third game of the second set due to food poisoning.
Davenport beat Alexia Dechaume Balleret of France, 6-0, 6-2. Kournikova topped Wiltrud Probst of Germany for the second time in three weeks, 6-1, 6-2.
