Chairman of the Board and Chief Mentor Officer of Infosys N R Narayan Murthy said that while the country should create wealth through entrepreneurship, its distribution should take place through philanthrophy. Murthy was delivering the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Memorial Lecture 2003 on 8216;The Travails of Philanthropy in India8217;.

Stating that though social indicators have improved over the last few decades, for example while literacy rate has climbed from 43 per cent in 1980 to 65 per cent in 2001 a lot still needs to be done. Adding that 51 per cent of the Indian population still do not have access to essential drugs while 68 per cent lack proper sanitation, Murthy said that there is a feeling that this is the job of the government. But philanthropy is also a way, Murthy added.

There are about 2 million NGOs and other development group in India. However, Murthy said, these groups are not organised. Further, people who donate are also of sceptical that their donations might not be put to good use. This is the main reason why in India only 1.7 per cent of the household income goes towards philanthropy, while in Indonesia, 6 per cent of the household income is spent for the same.

Stating that in the last few years Indians have become more concious about philanthropy, Murthy quoted from a survey which stated that almost 83 per cent of the companies surveyed felt that corporate social responsibility is an integral part of their business.

Making a strong case for affluent people donating money to worthy causes, Murthy said that in the US almost 83 per cent of the population are involved in philanthrophy and this has helped the country tackle its social problems. Another problem with philanthrophy in India is that most of the donations are made to religious bodies, Murthy said, adding that in Infosys, 8216;8216;We have taken a concious decision to stay away from giving donations for religious purposes8217;8217;.
