DECEMBER 9: Mumbai survived by the skin of their teeth at the Brabourne Stadium on Thursday. And when stumps were drawn for the day, Mumbai were on course to make the second round of the West Zone under-22 Cricket Tournament for the Hindustan Inks Trophy.

The day8217;s honours belonged to the Saurashtra duo of Sameer Pandya 75: 103b, 135m, 12215;4 and Rishi Trivedi 64: 123b, 155m, 8215;4 who almost enacted a stunning coup with an enterprising display of batsmanship. The seventh wicket pair joined hands with the side hopelessly placed at 57-6 while replying to Mumbai8217;s 270.

Pandya and Trivedi had the rival attack on their knees during their rollicking 117-run association. And the manner in which were piling runs it seemed that Mumbai8217;s status as a cricketing powerhouse was in for another beating. However, a bad mix-up between the duo ended Saurashtra8217;s aspirations resulting in Pandya being run out. Pandya8217;s dismissal came with Saurashtra still 96 runs away from overhauling the Mumbai total.

Thereafter, Mumbai took charge and bowled out the oppositon for 217, to gain the crucial lead worth 53 runs.

Earlier, resuming at the overnight score of 239-6, the Mumbai innings lasted for 77 minutes adding 31 runs in the process. Medium-pacer Sudip Mehta returned fine figures of 5-57.

The Mumbai medium-pacers Sachin Sawant 3-51, Swapnil Hazare 2-45 and Mussavir Khote 2-57 wreaked havoc in the opposition ranks. Hazare had provided a sensational start by claiming opener Kaniaya Vaghela with the very first delivery of the innings.

But Mumbai8217;s domination lasted until Trivedi arrived at the crease. Alongwith Pandya the duo scripted a gritty alliance that almost had put paid to Mumbai8217;s aspirations.
