The Mumbai Police is going to confront Sabahuddin, the prime accused in the terror attacks on the CRPF camp at Rampur and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, with Ajmal Amir Kasab in an attempt to know the local links which the LeT may have used in the Mumbai attacks.

The Mumbai Police got the transit remand of Sabahuddin on Tuesday. Last week, it had got the transit remand of Fahim, from whom the UP Police had recovered some hand-drawn maps of potential LeT targets in Mumbai in February last year. Both will now be taken to Mumbai.

Before coming to UP, the Mumbai Police had shown Kasab the photos of both Sabahuddin and Fahim. Sources said Kasab did not identify Fahim, but said Sabahuddin looked like a man he had seen in one of the LeT training camps in PoK.

Assistant Commissioner Police (ACP) of Mumbai Crime Branch Ashok Dhurate said: “Kasab probably knows Sabahuddin, but it would be confirmed only after they are confronted and quizzed together. We may get information about some links in the country which the LeT had used in the recent Mumbai attacks.”

Another official engaged in the 26/11 case said Sabahuddin was a very important man in the LeT’s set-up. At the time of his arrest, he was LeT’s area commander in Nepal where his job was to facilitate the operations in India. He was in regular touch with LeT commanders and had developed a network in India which he used in the Rampur and Bangalore operations. Sources said Fahim may have done a recce for the Mumbai attack, but he was just a foot soldier.
