A new 18-inch pipeline supplying water to Girgaum was put into operation at the hands of Chief Minister Manohar Joshi on Thursday morning.
The new pipeline will help provide water with added pressure to the residents of Jagannath Shankarsheth road, Raja Rammohan Roy Road and Khadilkar Road, Kranti nagar and Gaiwadi, BMC officials said. Pramod Navalkar, municipal commissioner Girish Gokhale and BEST committee chairman Arvind Nerkar were also present on the occasion.
Essay contest
The Bombay Electric Supply and Transport undertaking has announced an essay writing competition for students as part of golden jubilee celebrations of BEST municipalisation. The subjects for different groups are as follows: For class IX and X, importance of electricity in modern life, public transport – need of the hour, the role of BEST in Mumbai, what BEST means to me? The word limit is 500 words. For students of class XI and XII, the subjects are road safety, importance of fuel conservation, traffic congestion in Mumbai – causes and remedies, my expectations from BEST. The essay should not be more that 650 words long. Senior college students are expected to write a maximum of 750 words on energy conservation, increasing pollution in Mumbai and remedies thereon, importance of BEST in public service, people I meet in BEST bus. The essay could be written in Marathi, Hindi or English. Writers of first three best essays will be awarded with cash prizes. Free counselling
The Bombay Keraleeya Samaj has announced that it will offer free counselling to child-abuse victims, drug and alcohol addicts and women in distress. The counselling centre will operate on Saturday from 4 pm to 6 pm at first floor, Kerala Bhavanam, 16-A, K A Subramaniam road, Matunga (east). Free notebooks
The Mahila Vikas Mandal of Mira Road and the Sultan Khan Education trust, Naya Nagar area distributed note books to poor students free of charge this week. About 600 students ranging from class I to X residing in the area were provided with the note books. Municipal councillors from Mira Bhayander were present on the occasion.
Jail bharo
Maharashtra Pradesh youth Congress committee (MPYCC) president Anees Ahmed yesterday announced that a `jail bharo’ andolan will be organised on June 18 at Nagpur at the time of the state cabinet’s meeting to highlight the alleged incompetency of the Shiv Sena-BJP government to provide jobs to the 27 lakh unemployed youths. Ahmed was addressing the first executive council meeting of the MPYCC in which he felicitated the newly elected Maharashtra pradesh Congress committee pradesh Ranjit Deshmukh.
He also announced that the MPYCC would launch a campaign throughout the state against extortion and corruption.
