
MUMBAI, December 18: Over 10,000 hawkers from south Mumbai today took part in a morcha to the A-ward office of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Hawkers carrying out business at the GPO, D N Road, Nariman Point, Free Press Marg, Fashion Street took part in the morcha organised by the Bombay Hawkers’ Union. The hawkers were protesting the decision of the BMC to remove the hawkers near Gateway of India and other spots in south Mumbai.
Elections
Elections to various posts of office bearers of the NITC took place on December 15. The following were declared elected: C Shekharas senior vice president, and Neela Wagh, Romanee Menezies and Sunil paul as vice presidents. R Chandrasekaran has been elected general secretary.
Appointed
Cyrano Fernandes was recently appointed vice-president of the youth wing of the Maharashtra Samajwadi Party. Fernandes was unanimously appointed at the party youth wing meeting held at New Delhi. An active social worker since 1976, Fernandes was appointed secretary of the youth wing in Maharashtra in 1996.
Kalyan school
The bhoomi pooja for a new school in Kalyan was done at the hands of NM Jain, Chairperson, Century Rayon today. The Kalyan Education Society which also runs the Birla College here has chosen a site which is adjacent to the college ground. The proposed non-aided Birla school which is expected to begin its operations within a year’s time will be on par with well-known schools nationwide, informed the principal of Birla College, Dr R P Trivedi.
Ayyappa pooja
Shree Ayyappa Seva Sangham Powai will be conducting its 15th Mandal Pooja on December 20 and 21 at the Cinema Ground near IIT Powai. The Sangham is know for its social welfare activities like conducting free classes in Malayalam and Marathi.
As part of the celebration Bhajans, Narayaniam Parayana, Lalitasahasra Namam are also organised. Free food will be distributed to all in the afternoon. It has also arranged variety entertainment programmes by budding artists.
