MUMBAI, July 28: A fort-to-fort cycle expedition covering a distance of 417 km from Pune to Belgaum in 14 days is being organised by the Maratha Light Infantry Regiment of the Indian Army. The occasion of golden jubilee celebrations of Indian independence. The expedition will be flagged off from Pune on August seven and will terminate at the Shivaji stadium of the Maratha Light Infantry Regimental Centre at Belgaum on August 20. An official press release said that the expedition will have a proportional representation of soldier participants from the battalion of the regiment.

UN report

Violence against women and girls is a major obstacle to the social and economic development in the world today, according to The progress of nations 1997′ – a comprehensive report from the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef). The report describes a shocking litany of violence and abuse against women and girls that ranges from dowry killings in India and domestic violence in the United States to hurling of acid in Bangladesh, female infanticide and female genital mutilation. Releasing the report here today, Dr Prakash Gurnani, Unicef’s programme officer-health and officer in charge said that more than 60 million women who should be alive today are missing’ because of violence associated with gender discrimination.

Vet college

The Bombay Veterinary College Alumni Association has been organising the Gharda Oration lecture on the foundation day of the college on August two.The lecture will be delivered by Indian Council of Agricultural Research director general Dr R S Paroda. He will also be laying the foundation stone for the proposed Scientist Home’ and releasing the forthcoming issue of Vetline’ and bulletins for farmers in Marathi.

Certificates

Interns, including two gold medalists, of Padmashree Dr D Y Patil Dental Hospital, Navi Mumbai, will be receiving their certificates on July 31.The dental college and hospital will also conduct dental camps for economically backward class.
