Nominations for awards invited

  • On the occasion of the seventh Diwaliben Annual Awards, nominations are invited. The awards are 1 Progress in Religion 2 Rural Development 3 Social Welfare Work 4 Multiple Handicap 8211; treatment and rehabilitation 5 Specialisation in medicine.
  • Each award carries a medal, a citation and Rs 3,00,000 in cash. Awards will be presented on January 7, 2000, at the Nehru Centre Auditorium, Worli. The selection will be done by members of a jury under the chairpersonship of Justice P N Bhagwati, former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.

    Recommendations for the awards should be sent either in English or in Hindi by individuals or institutions. Self-nomination will not be entertained. There is no prescribed form for submitting recommendations. The details should include name of the nominee, his/her date of birth, educational qualifications, residential address, the nature of the work carried out by the individual and his/her contributions to the society. Therecommendations, accompanied by supporting documents and newspaper clippings, should be forwarded to: The Chairperson, Diwaliben Mohanlal Mehta Charitable Trust, Khatau Mansion, 1st Floor, 95-K Bhulabhai Desai Road, Oomer Park, Mumbai-36.

    Applications should reach by September 15, 1999.

    Inauguration of glaucoma project

  • B G Deshmukh, Chairperson of the Tata Council for Community Initiatives and Padmashri Dr Rajendra T Vyas, Hon Secretary General, National Association for the Blind inaugurated the Second Phase of Control of Glaucoma Project at Byculla.
  • Mr Raj Khilnani, Additional Commissioner of Police and Mr B T Bhalekar, Dy Commissioner of Police attended the function. The programme was organised by TCCI Council, set up by the House of Tatas to uplift the Community and NAB, one of the largest pioneering Welfare Institutions in India.

    NAB8217;s mobile opthalmic unit, a fully air-conditioned and computerised van for the detection and treatment of glaucoma is operated by qualified opthalmicpersonnel for the project. During the first phase of the programme, from July 8217;98 to June 8217;99, 8250 patients8217; eyes were tested at the Tulsiwadi Slum area, out of which 240 cases of glaucoma, 652 cases of cataract, and 3037 other cases including refractive errors, pigmentosa etc. were detected. All these cases were treated medically or through surgery as required. In the second phase of the project, civic organisations will be included.

    Medal for CR sub-inspector

  • Ghanshyam Pathak, Sub Inspector, Railway Protection Force RPF of Mumbai Division, Central Railway, was awarded the highest award of Indian Police Medal for meritorious service on August 15. Pathak has put in 39 years of service in the RPF. He has cracked several criminal cases, recovered huge amounts of stolen railway property and has saved the railway lakhs of rupees by preventing claim cases, stated a press release.
  • Harijan sangh sponsors booth

  • President of the Harijan Sevan Sangh, Mumbai, H N Trivedi, recentlyinaugurated a telephone booth to be operated by a handicapped Harijan youth, Chandrakant Govind Andre. The booth is located in front of Queen Mary School on Kennedy Bridge.Donation for Kargil
  • A cheque of Rs 10 lakh was handed over to Chief Minister Narayan Rane by Madhukar Chavan, Managing Director of the Abhudaya Bank on behalf of Abhudaya Co-operative Bank Ltd for Kargil fund.
