Sairaj collapse victim succumbs

The toll in the Sairaj building collapse at Thane rose to 17, with the death of 52-year-old Shantilal Kothari at Sion Hospital on Thursday. Kothari was the last to be rescued from the crash. He had been bathing at home at the time of the crash, and was extracted eight hours later by the fire brigade.

Panel on women and environment

An advisory committee has been set by the Ministry of Environments and Forests to increase the contribution of women in this area. The committee8217;s aim is to study the problems of tribal women and their needs and the role of women in various programs of forest department.

The committee comprises Dr Rita Verma, who is the president, and Dr Neelam Gore, Nirmala Deshpande, Amrita Patel from Gujarat, Nirmala Buch Bhopal, Vini Srinivasan Patna, Ramalaxmi Andhra Pradesh, Naidu Nuo Kohima, and Parmeshwaran Kanyakumar.

Painting competition

A painting competition has been organised for students and parents by animalrights organisation Ahimsa today on Cruelty Free and Eco-friendly Living8217; on the Gold Spot Factory Lawns, Western Express Highway, Andheri East, between 10 am and 2 pm. Workshop on Bertolt Brecht

To mark the birth centenary of noted German theatre personality Bertolt Brecht, Max Mueller Bhavan will screen four classic films on November 26 and 27 at the Stuttgart Hall near Jehangir Art Gallery at 6.30 pm. The films are in German, with English sub-titles. Admissions will be on a first come first served basis.

State literary awards announced

The Cultural Affairs Minister, Pramod Navalkar, announced the prestigious state literary awards today. Among the 60 winners include Dr Ranjan Darvhekar, Ashok Patole, Ramdas Bhatkal, Ambrish Mishra and Rekha Deshpande, an employee of the Express Group publicationLoksatta. Also Humorist D M Mirasdaar announced the Sahitya Sanskruti Mandal8217;s awards for new writers/poets. Both awards will be given away at a function to be held at the Y B Chavan auditorium after the state legislature8217;s winter session. Sixty awards worth Rs 4,25,000 were announced today.

Directory of real estate

A new directory, India Properties, which lists details of over 600 real estate projects in Mumbai, Pune and Bangalore to enable prospective buyers to make a decision, was launched in Mumbai last week by PEAK Publications Pvt Ltd.

Shakir Ebrahim of PEAK publications said the 8217;98-99 directory is the third edition. The first two were exclusivelyfor NRIs.
