MUMBAI, June 2: In a tragic incident, a father and his three sons were charred to death in a fire at Colaba this evening.

The fire broke out around 7.30 p.m. when Gopi Laskar Jadav (38) and his three sons Laxman (12), Kishor (10) and Dinesh (8) were watching television in the loft of their hutment (No 241) at Daryasagar Zopadpatti, near Colaba Market.

According to Gopi’s mother Chandrabai, the fire spread from the ground floor room of the hutment where her daughter-in-law Nemi was cooking.

The fire broke after Nemi left the hutment to answer nature’s call. “I was sitting at the market with my granddaughter Sunita (4) when we learnt that our house was on fire. We rushed to the spot, but by then everything was lost,” said Chandrabai.

The bodies were charred beyond recognition amidst the smouldering remains when rescue operations got underway.

At least five hutments were gutted in the fire.
